Project Overview

IMLeagues is the premier intramural athletics and tournament management platform in North America, powering sports scheduling, player rosters, and league brackets for student athletes across 200+ universities.

Primary Engineering Focus: Database query optimization, server lockup elimination, Redis caching tier architecture, and high-concurrency peak load management.

02

Business Context & Original Challenge

Collegiate intramural athletics operate on tight seasonal deadlines. When university registration opens for fall and spring semesters, tens of thousands of student athletes simultaneously rush to create teams and claim limited league slots.

The Bottleneck: Under these extreme traffic surges, the relational MySQL database experienced severe connection pool exhaustion, slow query lockups, and intermittent 504 gateway timeouts. Disappointed students were locked out of team registrations, generating massive support ticket spikes for university recreation departments.

03

Technical Constraints

This engagement operated under strict operational parameters that prevented generic or brute-force solutions:

04

My Responsibilities & Team Breakdown

To ensure total transparency, here is the verified breakdown of work I personally engineered versus the contributions of the client's internal team:

What I Personally Built
  • Personally conducted end-to-end MySQL Slow Query Log analysis and query execution profiling using EXPLAIN.
  • Identified unindexed foreign key joins and eliminated full table scans across high-volume athlete tables.
  • Re-architected relational composite indexes on roster and game schedule tables.
  • Architected and implemented a high-speed Redis cache-aside tier to offload heavy read traffic from MySQL.
Client & Wider Team Scope

Frontend user interfaces and native mobile apps were maintained by IMLeagues' internal engineering staff.

WORKING RELATIONSHIP

Direct 1-on-1 collaboration with executive stakeholders and lead engineers. Clean asynchronous Git workflows with zero intermediary layers.

Implementation Approach

A structured, risk-mitigated methodology built and validated on staging prior to production cutover:

Step 1: Metric-Driven Profiling
Isolated the top 10 most damaging SQL queries responsible for 80% of server CPU lockups using MySQL slow logs and query execution plans.
Step 2: Staging Benchmark Verification
Replicated the workload in an isolated staging environment to measure latency improvements before modifying production schemas.
Step 3: Index Restructuring
Engineered composite indexes specifically aligned with WHERE and ORDER BY clauses, eliminating filesorts and disk-based temporary tables.
Step 4: Multi-Layer Redis Caching
Implemented a cache-aside caching tier for public league standings, team rosters, and game schedules with granular write-invalidation hooks.
Step 5: Telemetry & Monitoring
Monitored live server response times, connection pools, and query latency during subsequent university registration windows.
06

Architecture & Technical Decisions

Key technical decisions made to guarantee data integrity, sub-second latency, and horizontal reliability:

Cache-Aside Read Shield

Read requests for public tournament brackets and university rosters hit Redis with sub-10ms response times, absorbing over 70% of peak registration traffic before it ever touches MySQL.

Elimination of Filesorts

Restructured composite indexes so sorting operations are satisfied directly by database index order, eliminating memory-to-disk buffer swapping.

Partitioned Log Tables

Separated high-frequency audit logs from primary operational tables, keeping transactional indexes compact and memory-resident.

Lessons Learned

Senior Engineering Takeaway

High-traffic SaaS performance issues are rarely resolved by throwing more server RAM or CPU at inefficient queries. Systematic query profiling and strategic Redis caching deliver an order-of-magnitude performance improvement at a fraction of infrastructure cost.
